Comic Description
An alien race demands that Earth's greatest champion fight their own champion. Superman and Muhammad Ali must first box one another on a planet orbiting a red sun (to negate Superman's powers) to determine who truly represents Earth. Ali defeats Superman in the ring and goes on to help defeat the alien Scrubb invasion.
Condition & Value
Condition Grade
Very Good/Fine (CGC 5.0)
Condition Details
Visible moderate spine rolling and heavy spine stress ticks along the left edge. Minor color-breaking creases in the upper left corner. General surface wear and slight dimpling consistent with the oversized 'treasury' format which is prone to shelving damage. Softening of corners.
Estimated Market Value
Raw: $80 - $120; Graded (CGC 5.0): $150 - $200
Recent Sales
Recent sales for mid-grade raw copies range from $75 to $130. High-grade (9.0+) copies fetch significantly higher premiums ($400+).
Grading Recommendation
Optional. Due to the oversized nature of treasury editions, CGC grading is expensive. This specific copy appears to be a mid-grade candidate (5.0-6.0 range); it may be better kept as a raw collector's piece unless a professional press and clean can significantly improve the spine, which might bump it to a 6.5.
Notable Features
Iconic 'wraparound' cover featuring numerous celebrities of the 1970s in the crowd (including Lucille Ball, Johnny Carson, and the Jackson 5). Oversized 10x13.5 inch format. First and only collaboration between Muhammad Ali and DC Comics.
Authentication Notes
The $2.50 cover price and 'C-56' numbering are consistent with the 1978 original. The paper aging on the edges appears consistent with late-70s newsprint/slick hybrid stock used for Treasury editions.
