This issue presents the original, uncensored ending to 'The Dark Phoenix Saga' as originally intended by Claremont and Byrne, where Jean Grey survives her Trial by Combat but is lobotomized rather than choosing to end her life. It includes a roundtable discussion with the creators regarding the editorial changes that led to the published version in X-Men #137.
Condition & Value
Condition Grade
Near Mint (CGC 9.4)
Condition Details
The book appears to be in high-grade condition. There is minor rounding on the bottom left corner and slight reflection on the polybag which may hide minor spine ticks. The cover gloss and color saturation are excellent. The visible barcode sticker on the bag is external and does not affect the comic itself.
Estimated Market Value
Raw: $5 - $10 / Graded (CGC 9.8): $30 - $45
Recent Sales
Recent sales for this 2024 facsimile edition generally hover around its original retail price of $6.99 to $10.00 for raw copies. High-grade graded copies have limited data but typically follow standard modern facsimile trends.
Grading Recommendation
Generally not recommended for grading. As a modern 2024 reprint (Facsimile Edition), the cost of grading usually exceeds the market value of the book unless it is a guaranteed 9.8 and intended for a personal collection. The original 1984 version is the primary target for collectors.
Notable Features
Facsimile Edition of the 1984 one-shot. Features the 'uncensored' ending. This version is distinguishable from the original by the $6.99 price point (the original was $0.75) and a modern barcode in the lower left.
Authentication Notes
Authentic 2024 Marvel Facsimile. The modern UPC code and the updated $6.99 price tag clearly distinguish this from the 1980s original.
