Comic Description
Frequently referred to as 'The 9/11 Issue' or 'The Black Issue,' this story deals with the aftermath of the September 11 terrorist attacks in New York City. It features Spider-Man and other Marvel heroes (and villains) assisting first responders at Ground Zero.
Condition & Value
Condition Grade
Near Mint- (CGC 9.2)
Condition Details
The cover appears structurally sound but shows minor edge wear and light blunting on the bottom right corner. Dark black covers are notorious for showing the slightest fingerprints and spine stress; visible reflections in the bag suggest some surface scuffing and a small price sticker on the lower left of the polybag or cover.
Estimated Market Value
Raw: $30 - $50; Graded (9.8): $150 - $225
Recent Sales
Raw copies typically sell for $40 on average. Recent CGC 9.8 sales have fluctuated between $180 and $240 depending on the auction platform.
Grading Recommendation
Worth grading only if it is a guaranteed 9.8. Because of the all-black cover, any tiny tick or scratch will drop it to a 9.2 or 9.4, which significantly reduces the value relative to grading costs. A professional press and clean is highly recommended due to the delicate nature of the black ink.
Notable Features
Tribute issue for September 11, 2001. Iconic all-black cover design. Key modern age issue. Features various Marvel villains and heroes standing together in mourning/solidarity.
Authentication Notes
Authentic first printing identifiable by the '36' placement and lack of subsequent printing notices in the indicia. The deep black ink and matte-to-gloss finish match original Marvel production standards from late 2001.
