Condition & Value
Condition Grade
Very Fine/Near Mint (CGC 9.0)
Condition Details
Light spine stress/white ticks visible on the left edge. Minor blunting on the bottom right corner. Some slight edge wear where the cover meets the polybag. Surface remains glossy and white levels look good for a newsprint era book.
Estimated Market Value
Raw: $15 - $25; Graded (9.0-9.4): $50 - $70; Graded (9.8): $150 - $200.
Recent Sales
Recent raw copies in similar condition sold for approximately $18-22 on eBay. 9.8 graded copies have sold for $185 recently.
Grading Recommendation
Currently only worth grading if it can achieve a 9.6 or 9.8. Professional pressing could help reach a higher tier by minimizing spine ticks. For a mid-to-high grade raw copy, grading may not exceed the cost of the service.
Notable Features
Iconic Alan Moore run; features a cover by Bissette. Notable for the 'Sophisticated Suspense' branding which marked the transition into the mature readers era of DC (later Vertigo). The cover features an ad for Action Comics #584.
Authentication Notes
Authentic copper-age DC publication. Correct paper stock for 1987, including the distinct newsprint interior. Staple placement and cover gloss are consistent with the period; no signs of a reprint or counterfeit.
