Comic Description

This issue begins the seminal 4-issue limited series that redefined the character after his debut in Mayhem. Stanley Ipkiss finds the mask and embarks on a ultra-violent, dark-humored rampage. This version is significantly darker and more violent than the subsequent Jim Carrey film adaptation.

Condition & Value

Condition Grade

Fine (CGC 6.0)

Condition Details

Visible spine stress and color-breaking ticks along the spine. Significant corner blunting on the bottom left and top left. Minor edge wear. The cover exhibits some light surface scuffing/soiling on the white background areas. Visible indentation/creasing on the top edge.

Estimated Market Value

Raw: $30 - $45; Graded (9.8 candidate): $450 - $600; Graded (6.0): $60 - $80

Recent Sales

9.8 copies have recently sold between $450 and $550. Raw high-grade copies typically fetch $50-$80, while mid-grade copies like this one sell for roughly $30-$40.

Grading Recommendation

Not recommended for professional grading in current condition. The visible spine ticks and corner damage will likely limit the grade to a 6.0-7.0 range. Grading fees would likely equal or exceed the value added. If it were a Near Mint 9.8 candidate, grading would be highly recommended.

Notable Features

First issue of the first 'The Mask' solo title. Features the first appearance of the modern iteration of Big Head (The Mask) and the antagonist Walter. Iconic 'Pie' cover by Doug Mahnke.

Authentication Notes

First printing established by the lack of a 'Second Printing' notice in the indicia (not visible here but standard for Dark Horse of this era) and the high-gloss cover stock typical of the early 90s Dark Horse 'Legends' era.
